Contemporary pergola in north London
The owners of this pretty garden in north London wanted to make better use of their wider-than-average side return. They had also inherited brick-built beds in the rest of the garden which couldn’t easily be altered, which they felt restricted their planting options somewhat.
We commissioned a contemporary style aluminium series of overhead beams, made to measure for the space by Harrod Horticultural. The narrow struts keep the space below light and airy, while providing strong support for climbing plants. We added a Trachelospermum jasminoides in a large container and a Clematis montana Grandiflora to scramble up the vertical supports to provide scent and some shade in the height of summer. The underplanting of agapanthus gives some additional summer interest to the space which has now become like an extra living room for the whole family.
Many thanks to Graham Thompson of Creative Landscapes London for installing the overhead beams and other landscaping work in the garden.
